Swish Blog Podcast Mix, Episode #24

This podcast has been long in the making, unfortunately I've just been too busy playing Football Manager and getting drunk and being ill to bother with one. Luckily though, this means that it's a real stormer as only the really good sht from the past month has made the cut.

Ok, now for a quick round up: If you haven't heard of Naked Babes yet where have you been? A collaboration between over-productive fidgety-types Tom Vek, Dev from Test Icicles and Ferry and Chris from Semi-Finalists; they make lovely noises.

Adam Kesher were the lead track on the last podcast and I couldn't help putting another track in this one. They're French, but good.

Hot Club De Paris are from Liverpool, which instantly makes them worth a listen (NB: when did The Zutons get so good?), but they're doing loads of dates in London over the next month or so; it's a must see.

Polytechnic are another band from where I like to call 'not-London' (this time from Manchester) who deserve special attention, especially as they manage to sound awesome despite one of their number having long hair and a beard.

NEW ACTION PLAN STUFF! (Jesus Christ it's good)

NEW STUFF FROM THE ROCKS! (Demo version of their next single! Woot!)

Subscribe to The Swish Blog Podcast by copying the following RSS url into your Podcasting software (iTunes, Juice etc) and hit subscribe..

http://www.swishblog.co.uk/swishcast/podcast.xml

(NOTE: this is a new Podcast url, the old one still works but will eventaully become defunct, please update your subscriptions)

The Swish Blog Podcast, Episode #24, 11/04/06
I'm lea phal de bee.
Swish Blog Podcast Mix, Episode #23

Adam Kesher are two brothers from Bordeaux - that's in France – who, like all the best French musical exports of the past 10 years, sound about as French as Yorkshire puddings. Their debut EP 'Where's My Place' (which this track is taken from) is out on April 24th; they're also playing some dates in London, tonight (15th March) at Plan B, Friday (17th) at the Bull & Gate and Monday (20th) at the Hope & Anchor. Worth a look I reckon.

'GoodBook' by MIT is apparently their first English language song, although I can't understand a bloody word of it.

Xerox Teens and The Horrors are featured in this week's NME, which must be nice for them.

Bertel Haugen is a genius.

I put 'Save Ginny Weasly' by Harry and the Potters at the end of this mix firstly because it's quite an old song, and it's possible that most of you would have already heard of them; and secondly because if you've never read a Harry Potter book you'll have no idea, and probably wont care, what it's about.

Ivor Cutler r.i.p.

Subscribe to The Swish Blog Podcast by copying the following RSS url into your Podcasting software (iTunes, Juice etc) and hit subscribe..

http://www.swishblog.co.uk/swishcast/podcast.xml

(NOTE: this is a new Podcast url, the old one still works but will eventaully become defunct, please update your subscriptions)</i>

The Swish Blog Podcast, Episode #23, 15/03/06
I don't wanna subscribe, but i will download the mix directly (160kbps) 49MB

1. Fittingly, in this special mix the boys - otherwise known as Chad & Dave - take us through the best scary music from films, TV and beyond, interspersed with their trademark 'hilarious' banter.

Subscribe to The Swish Blog Podcast by copying the following RSS url into your Podcasting software (iTunes, Juice etc) and hit subscribe..

http://www.swishblog.co.uk/swishcast/podcast.xml

(NOTE: this is a new Podcast url, the old one still works but will eventually become defunct, please update your subscriptions)

The Swish Blog Podcast, Episode #22, SwisHorror Mix
"What's an iPod-cast?" (?)
Swish Blog Artists of the Year Playlist Mix

So here it is my one and only piece of end-of-year listing. Each of the tracks on the playlist mix which you can download below has featured on a previous instalment of The Swish Blog's mixes this year; they are my favourite tracks of the year by, in my opinion, the year's best artists.

Not too complicated then: download it below by right-clicking and saving-as the appropriate link, plug in your headphones, and enjoy 'The Swish Blog End of Year Megamix', as I'm calling it in my own head.

The Swish Blog End Of Year Megamix
DOWNLOAD LOAD IT HERE

Scene Damage - Test Icicles {00.00}
Band of the year in my opinion, although if you've ever read this blog before you'd already know that. Scene Damage seems to have disappeared from their live sets and to my dismay was absent from the album, but about this time last year it was the track which helped me realise they were something special...

She's Not Leaving - The Research {3:30}
The guy wears a silly hat with badges on it, one of the girls is fat and the other is skinny.

All In My Head - Good Shoes {5:14}
Good Shoes are my favourite band that I've never seen live (although I'm discounting Girls Aloud because although I’ve never been to one of their concerts I have seen them at the Disney Kids Awards and Pollwinners Party), but it doesn't matter cos I put my very own Good Shoes concerts on every morning in the shower – I do all the hits: Morden, Never Meant To Hurt You, Small Town Girl and this one – and I reckon I'm as good as they are, if not better.

Madame Geneva - Greyhound Green {7.22}
Greyhound Green have a link entitled 'Other Stuff' on their website, which if clicked transports you into a magical world where goblins and elves rule.

London Sky Tonight - The Bridge Gang {9.54}
Oof. Everybody is bigging these up for next year, mainly off the back of this song, which I suppose took on extra meaning a last week when that big black oil cloud came overhead.

Downing Street Kindling - Larrikin Love {12.12}
I'm personally a bit embarrassed about how much I love Larrikin Love, especially after I publicly wrote on this blog at the beginning of March that they were bloody awful. I was wrong.

From The Ritz To The Rubble - Arctic Monkeys {14.52}
Music story of the year without a doubt, let’s just hope the backlash isn’t too strong because they seem to deserve all the praise they are receiving.

Wait (The Whisper Song) - Ying Yang Twins {18.05}
This is the only song by the Ying Yang Twins that I've ever heard but it’s been in my head all year, usually when I have my trousers around my ankles.

Pioneers - Mystery Jets {21.06}
At the start of the year Bloc Party finally fulfilled their potential which everybody has been harking on about for the past 3 years, half way through the year Mystery Jets covered Pioneers for some b-side or other, now Mystery Jets have the excitement and potential, and all the harking.

First And Foremost - Action Plan {24.48}
I still haven't decided whether Action Plan are a quiet band, or a noisy band. Can someone tell me please?

After The Fact - Jeremy Warmsley {28.13}
Not only responsible for bringing braces back into fashion, Jeremy also wrote Nizlopi's Christmas-#1-contender The JCB Song.

The Hypnotist's Son - Emmy The Great {31.00}
Emmy once sat on a sofa with no cushions. It hurt.

Loop Duplicate My Heart - Suburban Kids With Biblical Names {36.02}
This song was on a playlist mix in October where I accidentally called it Spår 02, when in fact it's called Loop Duplicate My Heart. I don't know how I did that.

Nine - ¡Forward, Russia! {39.07}
Was this song released this year? It should have been. It’s about Hemingway and the Nile or something.

Too Close For Comfort - McFly {42.52}
McFly win every accolade that I haven't already distributed to the other 14 artists. And they like man-sex with each other.
Here is this week's Playlist Mix, I hope you enjoy it, although I suppose if you'd payed any attention the previous post you'll already have this mix via the MAGIC of Podcasting, what fun.

586 are a band of boys and girls who obviously like mid-'90s twee (brit)pop and Shoreditch.
TAKEN FROM MY SWISH BLOG THING>> IF ANY OF YOU PODCAST, SUBSCRIBE TO MY FEED...

It has occurred to me that despite the Podcast of my (almost) weekly playlist mixes being available for the past seven months, many of you may not have subscribed because the link to subscribe has been hidden down at the bottom of the right sidebar for all that time.
So, now that Podcasts seem to be literally TAKING OVER THE WORLD, with everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Harry Potter getting in on the act I thought I'd flag up my feed to you all.

Firstly, a small introduction to Podcasts for any surviving luddites out there. What you must first realise is that podcasts aren't exclusively for iPods, The Swish Blog Podcast is an mp3 file that can be played on any compatible personal digital audio player, or media player on your computer (such as Windows Media Player or iTunes).
The point of a Podcast is that you get the media file automatically delivered to your computer each time a new one is available. To do this you must 'subscribe' to the Podcast. To do this you will need Podcast software, the three I would recommend are iTunes, Juice (formerly iPodder) and Odeo, once you have the software all you have to do is copy the Podcast URL into the software and click 'subscribe'.

The Swish Blog Podcast URL:
High Quality (160kbps) version of the Podcast
<input ... >

Low Quality (64kbps) version of the Podcast
<input ... >

The Swish Blog Weekly Playlist Mix 02-11-05

This week there will be two Swish Blog Playlist Mixes. One will celebrate the end of the warmer months of the year, the other welcoming the onset of the colder ones.

The end of October and start of November seems to be a tipping point between the autumnal optimism ("it's still summer! It's still summer! I can wear shorts if I like!"), and the hibernation mentality of winter ("I can't believe it's dark when I leave work! How shit is that!").

First: The Swish Blog 'Oh my god I wish it was still summer' Mix

On a bright October afternoon you're talking a walk on Wimbledon Common, the sun is low in the sky but it's still warm enough for you to only be wearing a t-shirt with your green cardigan over the top. You shelter your eyes from the light as you walk towards a clump of sliver birch trees; their leaves - although still green - have started to senesce and turn a coppery colour around the edges. The grass brushing against your legs has certainly started to die and the long yellow stems are bent and glistening with dew.
Although you can see steam come from you mouth as you exhale, you still wonder if you should take your cardigan off.
You wish you were on the Costa Del Sol.

The Swish Blog, Weekly Playlist Mix, 02/11/05
1. Happy As Annie (Session) - Larrikin Love
2. Mr. Brightside - McFly
3. Sorry Dave - The Junglists
4. Nothing But Green Lights (Digitalism Remix) - Tom Vek
5. LMNO Hoes - Test Icicles
6. Lovesick - The Arrogants
7. What Katy Did Next - Babyshambles
8. 2nd Gun - Volcano, I'm Still Excited!!
9. Grass - Animal Collective
10. Blue Eyes - Good Shoes
11. Dirty Mind - The Pipettes
12. Signing Emo - MC Lars
13. Away Away - Northern State
14. Bitch - Noblesse Oblige
15. What The Fuck? - Scream Club

Download it here please

Tree photo courtesy of It's Greg

I had intended to write small summaries of some of the tracks in last Friday's playlist mix, but completely ran out of time as I was late for an awards ceremony – about which, there is more on my Flickr – so for my sins (and my seemingly eternal hangover) I'll add them in now.

Firstly, Jeremy Warmlsley’s track After The Fact is taken from his soon-to-be-released EP '5 Interesting Lies' which is released on Transgressive on the 7th of November. Incidentally, any Londoners of a J_Wo persuasion should go to his EP launch party tomorrow night at the Camden Barfly – he's supported by Emmy The Great and Roland Shanks so it should be awesome – get there early!

I've been told I talk about Test Icicles way too much on here, so I'll keep this short: What's Michelle Like? was on the boy's first demo last September, but this is a rerecorded version which is the secret track on their new album 'For Screening Purposes Only' out 31st October.

Beauty Scars by Action Plan is the b-side to their new single 'Stendhal' out on Young and Lost Records at some point in the near future, this track has featured on a Swish Mix before, but this rerecorded version sounds a lot better and also seems to convey a lot more heart.

Now if you haven't downloaded the thing yet, do it now – you have no excuse (unless you're on a dial-up connection, or hate me).

clicky click

I did one last friday, but forgot to cross-post it to here because I was late for an awards ceremony (more on this later) so please go and download it now... it's pretty good, although my mixing on the first 3 tracks was a bit naff. it's gets a lot better after that.

Yeah so go and get it now if you'd like...
